The pandemic has changed the way we work, interact and go about our daily lives. For writers especially, it’s offered a unique opportunity.

Some are using this time to pick up a writing project they’ve neglected; others are finally sitting down to write the story swimming in their head. Many are journaling their thoughts, feelings and observations of this surreal time we’re living in.

We’ve opened The New York Writing Room to guide you on your writing journey. Whether you’re a novelist interested in feedback on your next book, an aspiring author looking for publishing advice or a professional who wants to improve his or her writing skills — we are here to help you.

The New York Writing Room is the first virtual chapter of The Detroit Writing Room, opened by journalist and author Stephanie Steinberg in June 2019. 

Between NYC and Detroit, we have a team of over 40 professional writing, photography and design coaches who offer one-on-one feedback on anything from books and plays, to cover letters and websites. The coaches include Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists as well as award-winning authors, photographers and podcasters. We also have professional grant writers and business plan writers to coach everyone from nonprofit leaders to entrepreneurs. 

When the pandemic hit 9 months into the business, Stephanie made coaching sessions and workshops available via Zoom and started seeing people join in from the east coast. She always thought that one day down the road, if The Detroit Writing Room was successful, she could open in other cities like the Big Apple. Corona made her see she didn’t need a physical location to do that.

Much like Detroit, New York is a haven for creators who are passionate about writing and the arts, and thrive when they’re part of a supportive community. While we cannot share the same pot of coffee with you in a Writing Room, the New York chapter can provide a connection with a coach who will help you achieve your writing goals and publishing dreams.  

We are excited to bring a brainchild of Detroit to a fellow creative city that appreciates writing and the arts. We curated a New York-based coaching team that is available for virtual coaching sessions, but if you admire one of our Detroit coaches, you’re of course welcome to sign up with them too!

Especially during times like these, we can support each other through art, creation and learning together.
